Early in the pandemic, my son was obsessed with the Disney show Jake and the Neverland Pirates. He would watch all of the episodes over and over so we decided to show him the original Disney Peter Pan movie as well. He was facinated and wanted to read and watch everything he could featuring his new favorite magical world. So… I decided to read him the original Peter Pan novel.
I knew the novel was much different from the Disney version, but I had no idea what I was bringing my son into. The story was like I imagine a child’s mind was dealing with the world around us in 2020. At the heart, it did have the fairytale theme we were familiar with, but the characters were much darker, much scarier, and more complicated than the Disneyland musical adventure.
The complexity of Peter Pan and Hook combined with watching my child grow up during a pandemic, the loss of innocence, and the desperation of humanity to hold onto the world they knew before all got my mind flowing with wild ideas. From these ideas, The Neverland was born.
A boy gorwing up during a global pandemic longs to escape the horrors of the world around him. His mother falls ill and he is swept away to Neverland. But the world is not at all like the fairytales he has grown to love. It is dark and devoid of magic. Something has been lost and this boy, Percy must find out what happened and how to bring the magic back to Neverland.
I try to write stories that reflect my observations of the world, and when the pandemic hit one of the most tragic things I saw was its effect on children. They were being forced to grow up early and deal with the harsh reality of a world forever changed. That is at the heart of The Neverland story.
